African Journalists Learn About Mining’s Impacts

Mining is an important industry in West Africa. It contributes to economic and social development, but it also disrupts the natural and human balance, raising questions about the risk it poses to communities living near mining sites.

These issues were discussed at a subregional media capacity building workshop for West African journalists, co-organized by the West and Central Africa Programme of the IUCN (IUCN/PACO) and GWP West Africa on 1-5 October 2012 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The theme of the meeting was "Mining and the protection of environment and natural resources in West Africa” and it brought together more than 40 journalists, parliamentarians, environmental experts and stakeholders in the mining sector, from 11 countries of West Africa and Central Africa.
