The theme of the meeting is: “IWRM in West Africa, Strategies of Adaptation in a Context of Proven Climate Change.”
This meeting sees the participation of the Chair and the five deputy-chairs of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), the Chair of GWP, Letitia A. Obeng, and the Chairs of the five GWP regions in Africa and the Mediterranean, in addition to regional partners of GWP West Africa.
The Abidjan meeting is an opportunity to bring to an operational level the Memorandum of Understanding signed by GWP and AMCOW in November 2007. GWP is a technical
partner for the implementation of the AMCOW action plan which focuses on water and climate change issues around the continent.
A high level panel will discuss strategies of adaptation to climate change through Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
Prior to the General Assembly, GWP West Africa is holding a Partners’ Meeting during which there will be a workshop on fundraising for Country Water Partnerships, with the financial support of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States). In addition, there will be meetings of the GWP/WA’s Steering Committee and Technical Committee.
The events in Abidjan will mark ten years of GWP in West Africa. It was in 1999 that GWP established the West Africa Technical Advisory Committee that worked to set up the Regional Water Partnership in 2002.
