20 Years of Water Cooperation in Central Asia

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (ICWC) among Central Asian countries, a Central Asian International Research and Practice Conference took place 20-21 September 2012 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to discuss past experience and future challenges of water cooperation in the region. GWP Central Asia and Caucasus, which celebrated its 10 years at the conference, has been instrumental in regional water cooperation and took active part in the conference.

UNECE Water Convention a Foundation for Water Cooperation

Dr. Danka Thalmeinerova, GWP’s Knowledge Management Officer, wrote this blog after attending a meeting on September 3-4, 2012, hosted by Finland, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention).

GWP IWRM ToolBox Introduced in Armenia

GWP conducted a training course on the “Application of the GWP IWRM ToolBox” at the Yerevan State University in Armenia, 25-26 April 2012. One of the main purposes of the training was to demonstrate how the GWP IWRM ToolBox can be used in university curricula.

The 6th World Water Forum. On 15th March there was conducted special Session “Input of Central Asia to the World Water Progress”, which was supported by GWP CACENA as co-organizer.

GWP CACENA to mediate in Aral Sea project

GWP Central Asia and Caucasus (CACENA) has received a grant from USAID to coordinate a consortium developing a regional economic model for the integrated use of water resources in the Aral Sea basin.

Economic Model for the Aral Sea

A USAID project to develop a regional economic model for the integrated use of Aral Sea basin water resources was granted to a consortium of DHI, COWI and GWP Central Asia and Caucasus (GWP CACENA), with GWP CACENA being asked to coordinate the project. A working meeting was held on 7-9 December 2011 to elaborate specific assignments for national experts from five countries.

GWP CACENA Regional Council Meeting

10-11 December 2011 Almaty, Kazakhstan

 

The Council Meeting was hosted by CWP Kazakhstan. The RC meeting was attended by all eight Council members and some regional TEC members from all eight countries, and regional Secretariat. The following issues were discussed during meeting:

 – Report from GWP’s Side Event at Astana 2011

At the Seventh “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference in Astana, Kazakhstan, GWP convened a side event titled, “Economic Growth and Water: An Integrated Approach Helps” on September 23, 2011. GWP Chair Dr Letitia A Obeng emphasized that “When we speak about the economy and economic growth we speak about water resources.”
