The 2014-2019 Strategy builds on GWP’s previous work and achievements. The strategy Towards 2020 stresses the need for innovative and multi-sectoral approaches to adequately address the many threats and opportunities relating to sustainable water resource management in the context of climate change, rapid urbanization, and growing inequalities.
GWP’s long-standing challenge – improving water security – is about stewardship of water resources for the benefit of societies and the environment. Many complex processes are involved, and consistency and long-term commitment is needed in order to succeed.
The Strategy identifies three interdependent goals: formulating and advocating evidence-based policies; generating and sharing knowledge; and supporting change through partnerships.
The global launch of the strategy took place at the Official United Nations World Water Day celebrations in Tokyo, Japan, on 21 March 2014.
