GWP Regions

This is where you can find links to the websites of our Regional Water Partnerships (RWPs). RWPs are closest to the countries where we work. They share knowledge and learning across national boundaries and are expected to have an open, inclusive, and gender-sensitive policies for bringing together as wide a group of stakeholders as possible to solve water problems.

New Publication Explores IWRM in the Caribbean

GWP has published a new Technical Focus Paper about the challenges facing small island developing states in the Caribbean. The paper is the first in a series to present a critical review of progress made in water resources planning and practice in GWP regions.

In 1998, the Forum of Ministers of the Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean agreed that integrating water and coastal resources management was a priority in the Caribbean region. In 2002, at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Caribbean States also committed to work towards developing integrated water resources management (IWRM) plans and water use efficiency (WUE) plans by 2005.

Some 15 years have now passed and this paper asks: What measures have been taken and what progress has been made?

“This paper deals with the 15 English-speaking Caribbean States, which comprise some of the most fragile economies in the region, and explains the special circumstances of small island developing states as they adopt and adapt to a 'source to sea' approach as their integrating framework,” says Dr. Mohamed Ait-Kadi, Chair of GWP’s Technical Committee, in presenting the paper together with Judy Daniels, Chair of GWP Caribbean.

The full paper is now available as a pdf-document online, and will soon also be available in print– it can then be ordered through the GWP online form, free of charge. The official launch of the paper will take place at the Consulting Partners meeting in June in Trinidad.
