This paper explores the relationship between the aims and instruments of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the principles of IWRM at the example of Central and Eastern Europe, where water management has been dominated by the WFD since these States became members of the EU. Technical Focus Papers are publications of the GWP Technical Committee that harness and share knowledge generated by GWP Partnerships.
Today, China is facing a great challenge as water resources begin to constrain the nation’s economic and social development. This paper describes the key water challenges and the steps being taken to address them – the so-called "three red lines", which set limits on water use, efficiency and water pollution. Technical Focus Papers are publications of the GWP Technical Committee that harness and share knowledge generated by GWP Partnerships.
Extreme and unpredictable rainfall patterns, intense floods and droughts add significantly to the cost of controlling and managing water resources in Eastern Africa. This paper describes the different approaches in IWRM being taken in selected countries in Eastern Africa to address their unique resource management challenges. Technical Focus Papers are publications of the GWP Technical Committee that harness and share knowledge generated by GWP Partnerships
This paper presents country-level estimates of water, sanitation, and hygiene-related mortality and economic losses associated with poor access to water and sanitation infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) from 1990 to 2050. It examines the extent to which the changes that accompany economic growth will solve water and sanitation problems and, if so, how long it will take. Technical Focus Papers are publications of the GWP Technical Committee that harness and share knowledge generated by GWP Partnerships.
In spite of local uncertainties about the intensity and variability of climate change, it is urgent to initiate adaptation measures in river basin management, including transboundary basins. This publication provides guidance on how to prepare and implement a strong, realistic and operational medium-to-long-term plan for adapting to climate change through a number of case studies and “lessons learned”. This Handbook was produced jointly by GWP and the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) in order to capture experiences with planning and implementing IWRM.
