Becoming an Environmental Engineer is a journey in itself, says Anja Potokar, a water professional who collaborates with GWP Central and Eastern Europe. In celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD2020), she shares her career story – on how great mentors helped her to establish herself as a young engineer.
During the UNFCCC COP25 climate change conference in Madrid, GWP received news that it had passed the “Financial Management Capacity Assessment” (FMCA) of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). This approval enables GWP to be a delivery partner of countries to access the GCF Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme (the Readiness Programme).
Migration is a complex and multi-layered issue, with many pre-conceptions and controversies surrounding the debate on it. On 22 January, GWP together with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Partners, organised a webinar to shed some light on the linkages between water insecurity and outmigration from rural areas.
GWP, GEF IW:Learn and partners are launching a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on “Governance for Transboundary Freshwater Security” at the end of August 2020. The tentative start date is 31 August. The timing coincides with the start of the school year – giving educators the opportunity to build the MOOC into their curricula. One of the MOOC lecturers is Dr Jackie King, who shares a video message on why the MOOC is more relevant than ever. She says that “we are learning the hard way that everything is connected.”
GWP is co-convenor of a Virtual Workshop on legal frameworks for transboundary water cooperation, held on 28-29 July. The UNECE-led event is tailored to support the preparation of a checklist to assist countries and/or other relevant stakeholders in the design and drafting of agreements.

The 9th World Water Forum (WWF9) which is being held in Dakar from 22 to 27 March 2021 is an event for Africa and particularly the West African region. In order to contribute to a good preparation and participation of the region into the Forum, major regional institutional actors in Ouagadougou are working together to better coordinate the participation process of the region.
